Program Descriptions

Walking The County of San Mateo is committed to providing its employees with a comprehensive set of services and incentives that support an employee's choice to use public transit, carpool, vanpool, walk or bike to work. The San Mateo County Commute Alternatives Program (CAP) is a convenient way to try an alternate to driving your single-occupancy vehicle from home to work. We our committed to reducing traffic, cutting traffic-related air pollution, conserving energy and improving the quality of life for employees and the community. Our aim is to help reduce the idling alone in dead-stopped traffic, weekly and costly trips to the gas station, and parking hassles that many of our employees endure.

Over the past 13 years, CAP has helped benefits eligible employees increase their use of high-occupancy commute modes, and has prevented millions of pounds of pollutants from being emitted into the air and reduced millions of vehicle miles of travel on Bay Area roads. These long-time efforts have been recognized by:

    The U.S. Office of Transportation and Air Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for meeting the "National Standard of Excellence for Employee Provided Commuter Benefits". The Bay Area's 2002, 2003, 2004 "Best Workplaces for Commuters;" recognized for its commitment to providing employees with outstanding commuter benefits, making its workplace a leader in helping to reduce traffic and air pollution in the San Francisco Bay Area. The San Mateo County Economic Development Association "2002 Awards of Excellence Environmental Action Award" Acterra: Action for a Sustainable Earth - Business Environmental Network "2002 Business Environmental Awards".
